Morality of Medical Treatment for “Transgender” Persons

Question:

What is Catholic advice for medical providers practice in a healthcare organization that requires him/her to prescribe hormone replacement as transgender treatment?

Answer:

Human persons are made in the image and likeness of God (Gen. 1:26-27). People experiencing same-sex attraction (SSA) should access great Catholic apostolates like Courage and other resources. In addition, those struggling with gender dysphoria need to be treated with compassion, which includes helping them live joyfully as God created them.

Consequently, Catholic medical providers should not provide hormone replacements to support “transgender” treatment of any sort, as this is not genuine medical treatment. Instead, if they face hostility in the workplace, they should invoke their conscience rights not to provide any treatment that runs contrary to their freedom of religion, which the First Amendment safeguards. And they should seek legal support, if necessary, from groups like the Thomas More Law Center or Becket.

Long-term, depending on what happens in their current workplace, they might also consider seeking out a more Catholic-friendly employer.
