Making Sense of John 6:62-63

Question:

How do you and/or the Church answer the question asked in John 6:62, and whose flesh is it that is of no avail in John 6:63?

Answer:

I’ll answer your second question first. The “flesh” Jesus notes in John 6:63 refers to our inclination to think only with our natural human reason instead of the enlightenment that comes with the grace of God, with whom all things are possible (see Matt. 19:26). For more on this topic, please see this Catholic Answers tract and this article in our magazine.

Regarding John 6:62, Jesus describes himself as the “Son of man,” identifying himself with the heavenly figure noted in Daniel 7:13. Jesus is referring to his Ascension, which will take place forty days after his Resurrection.
