Your Guardian Angel Already Has a Name

Question:

May I name my guardian angel?

Answer:

No, the Church directs us not to do so, but you may certainly cultivate a relationship with your guardian angel, to whom you can refer as “my guardian angel” or “my angel.”

In the Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy, the Church provides, “Popular devotion to the holy angels, which is legitimate and good, can, however, also give rise to possible deviations . . . . The practice of assigning names to the holy angels should be discouraged, except in the cases of Gabriel, Raphael, and Michael whose names are contained in Holy Scripture” (no. 217).
