What’s Wrong with Buddhist Philosophy

Question:

Can a Christian follow Buddhist philosophy?

Answer:

Non-Christian religions have truth within them, as Vatican II’s Nostra Aetate affirms (no. 2), as can their related philosophies. However, there are pitfalls in both, as the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith noted in its 1989 document regarding some aspects of Christian meditation.

Consequently, one could possibly profit from some aspect of Buddhist philosophy that is harmonious with Christian philosophy. However, given the pitfalls, and the fact that the average person is not likely to excel at evaluating what might not be harmonious with Christian doctrine and philosophy, we counsel against attempting to follow Buddhist philosophy.
