Studying the Psalms

The best study of all would be to obtain St. Augustine’s sermons on all the Psalms (New City Press) and read through them. Then you will have a deep understanding of the nature of the Psalms as prayer and as Christian prayer in the Church—that is, the prayer of Christ the head and of us, his members. This would not be a modern academic study of the Hebrew poetic tradition, but it would provide you with the most profound understanding of the way the Church uses the Psalms in her life of prayer and worship These works of the great St. Augustine also give us a beautiful insight into the mentality of Christ.
