Prayerful Meditation

Question:

Are priests taught to meditate? Is meditation discouraged for Catholics?

Answer:

The Church encourages all Catholics to meditate prayerfully. A classic example of this prayer form is the rosary, in which we meditate—that is, prayerfully reflect—on events in the lives of our Lord Jesus and our Lady and do so in light of our own walk with God. Mother Angelica of EWTN once noted wryly that we all know how to meditate, because we all have, at one time or another, ruminated about or stewed over something bad done to us and how we might avenge that wrong. The key, of course, is to meditate on things that will draw us closer to the Lord—thus the mysteries of the rosary.
