No Pizza, No Video Games, No Wife?

Question:

Must we deny every single desire of the flesh to receive the greatest reward in heaven? No pizza, no video games, no wife?

Answer:

If I like fried chicken more than any other food, does this mean that if I enjoy a piece of chocolate cake, I somehow like chicken less? Of course not. Every good that we enjoy is good only because it is a participation in the eternal, unlimited good that is God. But when we have to choose between God and some lesser good, we must choose God, who is the greater good.

To sin is to choose a lesser good in place of God. Sexuality is good when it is used according to the context of God’s plan, i.e., in a marriage between a man and a woman. But when it is used outside of his plan, we are putting a lesser good (ourselves) first.

We may enjoy the goods that God sends us—including pizza, video games, and one’s husband or wife—but always according to his plan as he reveals it through Scripture and his Church.
