Jesus’ Appearance After the Resurrection

Question:

Is there an official teaching about why the disciples did not recognize Jesus on the road to Emmaus?

Answer:

You’re referring to the historical account recorded in Luke 24:13-35. There is no official teaching, but it could be a combination of things, including the struggle for the disciples to believe that Jesus actually rose from the dead. The appearance of Jesus’ glorified risen body likely also contributed to their not recognizing him. Mary Magdalene also didn’t recognize Jesus earlier on that same Easter Sunday (see John 20).
