Is Selling One’s Blood Plasma Moral?

Listen to the audio version of this content

Question:

What does the Church teach about selling one’s plasma?

Answer:

Receiving financial compensation for giving your blood plasma is morally fine. In doing so, you provide a vital benefit to other human beings, and your plasma will be replaced naturally by your body. Also, in contrast to simply donating blood, and including because of the time involved in giving plasma (90 minutes to two hours), the medical community will provide you financial compensation. Further, the Church has registered no objection to this compensation, while it has regarding the sale of organs, including because of the signficantly greater health risk through major surgery and related trauma.

Still, you should not become too reliant on the income from giving your plasma and thereby jeopardize your health by trying to give too much. Please consult your medical doctor in this regard.
