How Can We Eat Jesus’ Flesh if God Is Spirit?

Question:

If God is Spirit (John 4:24), how can he give us his flesh to eat in the Eucharist?

Answer:

As you say, the Bible clearly teaches that “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:24). These are the words of Christ to the Samaritan woman at the well.

In addition, St. John teaches us in his gospel that “in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” and that “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:1, 14). Jesus is the Incarnate Word, “the Word became flesh,” the God-man.

But because he is both God and man, Jesus can give us flesh to eat in the sacrament of the Eucharist. For more information on the Eucharist, here is a link to our free tract on “The Real Presence,” which provides the views of early Church Fathers on the Eucharist. And here also is our “Christ in the Eucharist” tract, which provides a biblical defense of the Church’s teaching in light of Jesus’ Bread of Life Discourse in John 6 and other important scriptural passages.
