God’s Choice of Joseph for Mary

Question:

Why was Joseph chosen to become the Blessed Virgin Mary’s husband?

Answer:

Joseph proposed to Mary, as is long tradition for husbands in Jewish and Christian history.

But why did God lead Joseph to be the foster father of Jesus through his marriage to Mary? Only God can answer that question definitively, but we know that Joseph was in the right Davidic line to serve in this very important role (see Matthew 1:1-17).

In addition, Joseph’s holiness no doubt played a key role (Matthew 1:19). In addition, we know further of Joseph’s holiness through his titles as “Most Chaste Spouse” and “Terror of Demons.”
