Does Romans 5:1 mean we can never lose our salvation–that peace with God is permanent?

I heard a former Catholic, now an Evangelical, insist Romans 5:1 ("since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God") means that we can never lose our salvation. He says the biblical concept of peace is robust and doesn't mean just a temporary cease-fire. What's your reply?
