Divorced and Remarried: Can We Become Catholic?

Question:

My husband and I have both been divorced before we were married. May we join a Catholic church?

Answer:

Yes, you may. However, to do so in good faith, you would have to agree to live as brother and sister—i.e., no sexual relations—until if you received your respective annulments (which isn’t a sure thing) and then were married in the Church. In the meantime, you could receive Holy Communion. Yet if you are known in the community and known to have been married before, you should receive from the parish pastor privately to avoid giving scandal to others (see the Catechism 2284-87).

To better understand why the Church takes so seriously the reception of Holy Communion, I offer my article regarding that matter in connection with divorced and remarried couples.
