Cutting Back on Charity in Hard Times

Question:

My husband lost his job. Is it okay to cancel or cut back on charitable donations until we have income again?

Answer:

Of course. A married couple’s primary duty is toward each other. That is their primary vocation and calling from God. Making sure your family is secure and stable is the first priority. Once that is taken care of, you can determine what is available for charitable purposes. If you are facing difficult times financially, it is most appropriate to cut back on other things (including charity) to ensure the stability of your family.
