Child Fears Communion Is Like Cannibalism

Question:

How do I explain transubstantiation to my nine-year-old who fears eating the body and blood of Jesus is like cannibalism?

Answer:

Cannibalism, regarding humans, consists of actually eating the flesh and blood of another human being.

We must remember that Jesus is God. We receive Jesus in the Eucharist in the form of bread and wine, not in the form of a human body. Even though Jesus feeds us with himself, he doesn’t become any less than he was before we received him. He is God and he can do such a thing. So we are not hurting him when we receive Holy Communion. What’s really happening is that he is giving us strength—far more than any earthly food can give.
