Asking for Extraordinary Graces

Question:

Are there graces that are so extraordinary that we are sinning just by asking for them?

Answer:

Seeking God’s grace is ordinarily a virtuous endeavor, not a sinful one, because God wants us to participate more fully in his divine life, which is what grace is (CCC 1997, 1996ff.).

The possibility of sin could occur if we asked for special graces, didn’t receive them, and then became angry, despondent, or even despairing over not having been granted those graces. The thing to remember is that God always loves us, even if he doesn’t give us extraordinary graces. Such a disposition will better enable us to cultivate and maintain an attitude of gratitude toward God.
