A Protestant Degree Isn’t Sufficient for Priesthood

Question:

I have a seminary degree from a Protestant seminary. Do I need to go back to a different seminary to become a priest?

Answer:

While your Protestant seminary studies and degree would presumably allow you to be exempt from certain classes at a Catholic seminary, you undoubtedly would have to take a number of theology and philosophy classes, given the significantly different take on those subjects by the Catholic Church and any Protestant seminary.

Although you’d undoubtedly be a leg up in some ways on your Catholic seminary counterparts, you’d still have to take a number of classes. For more specifics, contact your diocesan vocation director or the vocation director of the religious order in which you may be interested.
