Fr. Gary Thomas, is a Vatican-certified, practicing exorcist.  He was raised in San Francisco and is a long-time pastor in the Diocese of San Jose.  In 2005, he was selected by his bishop to attend a Vatican-sponsored course on exorcisms.  The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist, (Doubleday, 2009), by journalist Matt Baglio describes his training under a master exorcist in Rome, and also gives readers an inside look of the church’s use of the rite of exorcism, and its role in contemporary life.
