A video has recently circulated of a woman taking abortion pills at her gender-reveal party after finding out she was having a girl and not a boy.
Yes—you read that correctly.
Although there is speculation that the video was staged, quite a few people on social media are praising the woman’s actions:
Even for pro-abortionists, these reactions seem extreme. But this reaction is consistent with some of their arguments to justify so-called abortion rights. If a woman should be able to get an abortion whenever she wants, for whatever reason—because it’s “her body, her choice”—then aborting a baby because the mother doesn’t want to be pregnant with a girl is absolutely fine.
Although they may write off this crazy situation as something that rarely happens, this couldn’t be further from reality.
A study conducted in 2019 found that over twenty-three million females are missing globally due to sex-selective abortions. Over half of those numbers come from India (10.6 million) and China (11.9 million), due to their strong social preference for males. Since this study was conducted seven years ago, these numbers have likely increased.
If you care for women’s rights, as many of these pro-abortionists claim to, it’s hard to justify such a sexist practice. Yet, if you refuse to draw any lines for abortion access, you are trapped into supporting abortion even if the reason is sexist (or ableist).
Ironically, the same belief systems that these pro-abortion feminists are trying to eradicate, they are also enabling (and in some cases, celebrating).
I understand that some people who approve of abortion would also say that sex-selective abortions are evil. How do they get around the inconsistency? By claiming this type of abortion negatively affects others in society, since it promotes harmful beliefs about females. Using a utilitarian framework, preserving healthy beliefs of females in society is more beneficial than protecting a woman’s “right” to abort her daughter.
But what if the woman does the aborting secretly, in a society where sexism is practically non-existent? If that woman’s gender-reveal abortion fiasco was never posted online, on what ground could these pro-abortionists object?
Whether we are pro-life or pro-abortion, most of us intuitively recognize that not all reasons for abortion are equally valid. (Of course, no reason is valid, but some are at least more understandable than others.) It’s one thing for a woman to get an abortion because her doctors tell her that the pregnancy will greatly risk her own life. It’s another for a perfectly healthy and well-off woman to get an abortion because she’s always wanted a baby boy but found out she’s having a girl.
For the pro-life person, we actually have an explanation for why these circumstances feel very different—because abortion is dealing with an actual human person, not just a potential one. The pro-abortionist who sees a fetus as nothing more than a clump of cells, however, lacks this explanation, leaving the door open to justify sex-selective abortions.
This should be a huge wake-up call for the pro-abortion movement to tighten its arguments. Better yet, they should join the side that consistently condemns violence against all women.
