Anastasius IV, POPE, crowned July 12, 1153; d. in Rome, December 3 of the following year. It was during his pontificate and owing to his exertions that the Pantheon was restored. He also granted special privileges to the Order of the Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem. He is chiefly known for his attitude towards Frederick Barbarossa and recognition of Wichmann as Bishop of Magdeburg by which he terminated an ecclesiastical quarrel. His extant works consist of some letters and a treatise on the Trinity.
