Alexandria, the Diocese of, suffragan of Kingston, Ont. It comprises the counties of Glengarry and Stormont, and was created a diocese by Leo XIII, by the Decree “In hac sublimi”, January 23, 1890. It has 24,000 Catholics, 19 priests, 16 sisters, 14 parishes, 19 churches, 4 convents, 2,500 children in Catholic schools. First bishop, Alexander MacDonnell, b. Lochiel, County Glengarry, Ont., November 1, 1833; d. at Montreal, May 30, 1905. He was ordained priest December 20, 1862; appointed bishop, July 18, 1900; consecrated in October of same year.
