Would Jesus Exist Without Mary?

Question:

Would Jesus exist without Mary?

Answer:

The answer is yes and no. The one person who is Jesus Christ could and did exist in a sense without Mary, because the one person is God the Son, the Eternal Word, who always was from all eternity before he was incarnate of the Virgin Mary in time. Yet it is true that the man who is Jesus would not be a man were it not for his being born of the Virgin Mary by the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit. Mary is the Mother of God because she is the mother of the person who is God, but this divine person would not be Jesus, a man like us, unless he had been conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.

It is also true that there never was a time from all eternity when God the Son did not intend to become the Son of Mary. So as long as he has been God he has had Mary in mind. This is why the Church applies to the Virgin Mother the texts of the book of Proverbs about the Wisdom of God which is with him from all eternity before the world began.
