2283 We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives.
To be guilty of a mortal sin an individual must know what he is choosing and freely choose it. Individuals who commit suicide are usually suffering from some kind of psychological or emotional condition that overwhelms them and impairs their ability to fully understand and freely choose their actions. Even more so for children who can’t possibly understand what they are doing.
We must always remember that Jesus taught us that God is Father (Matthew 7:11; Luke 11:11). God creates us out of nothing, no one could have greater love for us than God. God would embrace such a child with all love and compassion.
