Why Is Righteousness a ‘Breastplate’?

Fr. Hugh Barbour, O. Praem.2022-06-27T11:59:12

Question:

What does it mean to put on the breastplate of righteousness?

Answer:

St. Thomas teaches that the image of the breastplate is used because righteousness or justice protects the other virtues as a breastplate protects the body. So it is a characterization of justice as a universal virtue underlying all the other virtues.
