Why Did Nicodemus Bring So Much Spice?
Why did Nicodemus bring such a large amount of spices to the tomb?
As with the sinful woman who anointed the Lord's feet in the house of Simon, the amount used was not dictated by practical necessity but was a sign of the honor due and given to the Lord himself. Forty pounds were used for the funeral of the Rabbit Gamaliel, so a hundred pounds (or more likely about seventy-five of our pounds) would be a sign of extreme veneration of the person of Jesus. This excess is a sign both of the love of Our Lord's followers and of his surpassing dignity.
