But in a few words, religion comes about when one is moved by the magnificence of a sunset or the sublime innocence of a new-born. Such experience of awe runs us head-long into the ineffable and our inability to express what we behold. This leaves with the awareness of our inability to adequately articulate the Source of the sublime goodness before us. This is what religion is and does. Such ultimate acknowledgement constitutes worship or adoration.

And no; one cannot know God without religion.
