What Did the Council of Trent Say About Mark 16:9-20?

Question:

What did the Council of Trent say about Mark 16:9-20?

Answer:

In modern times, some scholars have considered Mark 16:9-20 to be a later addition to the Gospel of Mark.

The Council of Trent indirectly addresses this passage in two sections.

In its fourth session, the Council mentioned that Jesus commanded his disciples to preach the gospel to every creature. This is a command of Jesus contained in Mark 16:15.

The same session also declared the entirety of all books found in the Latin Vulgate to be canonical Scripture.  Mark 16:9-20 is contained in the Latin Vulgate’s Gospel of Mark.
