Studying Bioinformatics

Question:

Where can I find information for my son to study bioinformatics with a Catholic viewpoint in college? He’s really interested in it, but I don’t want him learning the secular viewpoint.

Answer:

Bioinformatics is “an interdisciplinary field that develops methods and software tools for understanding biological data. As an interdisciplinary field of science, bioinformatics combines computer science, statistics, mathematics, and engineering to analyze and interpret biological data.” As a scientific discipline, it is not something that requires study from “a Catholic viewpoint,” and it could be difficult for your son to find a good program that teaches this discipline from a Catholic worldview.

If you are concerned about your son’s ability to study a scientific discipline in a secular setting under professors who do not share his Catholic Faith, I recommend that you and he consider an undergraduate Catholic liberal arts program that will train him in how to think critically. Such a program could prepare him for graduate studies in a secular environment. There are several Catholic liberal arts colleges with programs designed to teach students critical thinking; one of the best-known and most well-regarded is offered by Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, California. Armed with such skills, many of its graduates go on to earn advanced degrees in a range of disciplines, including many fields of science.
