Sacrilege by a non-ordained Catholic by way of the Eucharist

Listen to the audio version of this content

Question:

If an attempt is made by a non-ordained Catholic to confect the Eucharist, would that be considered a sacrilege or a sin of “simulating” a sacrament? Or both?

Answer:

It would be both. Obviously, it is simulating a sacrament. And that is grave sin. But it is also sacrilege because of the profanation (making profane that which is sacred by nature) involved in abusing the liturgy, which is sacred, as well as the altar being used, vessels, etc. These are all classic examples of sacrilege (CCC 2120; CIC 1367, 1376).
