Psychotic Behavior Can’t Be Immoral

Question:

Is a schizophrenic having a psychotic break responsible for his or her sins, and must he or she therefore confess?

Answer:

Free choice is necessary to be culpable of sin. If someone was having a “psychotic break,” I would presume that the individual was not acting with reason and choice and therefore would be not be culpable for the objectively immoral actions. As such he or she would have no moral need to confess, but if it helped with treatment or peace of mind, it would not be a problem to confess it.
