May Separated Spouses Receive Communion?

Question:

Would a person be able to receive communion if they lived seperately from their spouse?

Answer:

From a canonical perspective, the individual would be eligible to receive Communion.

From a moral perspective, the individual would need to examine his conscience as the motives for living separately from his spouse. If the motives are selfishness, greed, escape from responsibility, etc., then the individual’s separation would be sinful and most likely require confession and an attempt at reunion to receive Communion with a clear conscience. If, however, there are serious issues or a threat to well being (emotional or physical), then the individual can receive with a clear conscience.
