May I Receive Communion?

Listen to the audio version of this content

Question:

If I was married outside the Church to a spouse who was only baptized Catholic (no other sacraments), may I take the Eucharist?

Answer:

Catholics are required to be married in the Catholic Church or receive a dispensation to be married elsewhere (canons 1059, 1108). If a Catholic is married outside the Church without a dispensation, then it is an invalid marriage.

Catholics in invalid marriages are to first validate their marriage in the Church prior to receiving Communion.

You do not say whether you are Catholic or not. Outside of extraordinary circumstances (canon 844 §4), non-Catholics are not permitted to receive Communion in the Catholic Church. If you are Catholic, then you would have to first validate your marriage before receiving Communion.
