John Chrysostom: Catholic or Orthodox?

Question:

Was St. John Chrysostom a Greek Orthodox priest or a Catholic one?

Answer:

St. John Chrysostom lived in the fourth century, the Catholic and Orthodox Churches did not split into two separate churches until the eleventh century. He was simply a priest of the Church in Antioch of the one universal Church. Toward the end of his life (c. 398), he became the bishop of Constantinople, which would eventually split with the Western Church, but that would not be until six centuries later.
