Jesus’ Words on the Cross

Question:

Why did Jesus say, "My God, why have you forsaken me"?

Answer:

His words were an expression of divine abandonment. Jesus was fully human, and as a man was capable of feeling abandoned by God. These words are also the opening line of Psalm 22, a psalm that prophesied the suffering and ultimate triumph of God’s anointed. It is possible that Jesus continued to pray the rest of the psalm silently after speaking aloud the opening line.
