Is It Sinful to Leave Work Early?

Question:

Is it sinful to leave work early?

Answer:

If someone leaves work early with the permission or understanding of his boss then it is not a sin.

If someone leaves work early against the legitimate desire of his boss then it would be sinful.  When we work for someone else we have agreed to perform our jobs to the satisfaction of our boss or supervisor and follow their rules.

I used the term “legitimate desire” because there are clearly some circumstances where it would be sinful for the boss to desire his employee remain at work.  For example, if the employee’s child has been taken to the hospital and the employee wants to leave to go to the hospital.
