Is Imperfect Contrition at Death Enough?

Question:

If people in a state of mortal sin repent with imperfect contrition at the moment of death, can they still attain eternal salvation?

Answer:

Imperfect contrition means a sorrow for sin that is not motivated by supernatural charity but by fear of punishment. Of itself, imperfect contrition is good and reasonable as far as it goes, but it does not suffice for the removal of the obstacle of grave sin. So the best thing for the person to do is to ask God for the grace of loving him and repenting because of his goodness, not only because of his punishments. It is practically certain that God will grant this grace to those who ask for it, since he himself has commanded us to love him!
