How Does an Alcoholic Priest Say Mass?

Question:

What does the Church do about a priest who is an alcoholic but has to receive both species as part of offering Mass?

Answer:

A priest who suffers from alcoholism and should not consume wine can apply for permission to use mustum. Mustum is grape juice that is either fresh or preserved by methods that suspend its fermentation without altering its nature (for example, freezing). If a priest is unable to obtain mustum, he may ask the bishop for permission to receive only the host.
