Hematopoietic Stem Cells Are OK

Question:

Is the Catholic Church opposed to the use of HSCT (hematopoietic stem cell transplantation)?

Answer:

It is important to remember that the Church is not opposed to stem cell research. The Church opposes the use of stem cells that are derived from the destruction of human embryos (Evangelium Vitae 60).

Hematopoietic stem cells are derived from adult bone marrow, peripheral blood, and umbilical cord blood. Since human life is not destroyed to acquire such cells, it is considered an acceptable method of stem cell research and transplantation. In fact, there is a Catholic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Bank in Seoul, Korea.
