God’s ‘Sorrow’ an Inadequate Analogy

Question:

Does God feel sorrow when we sin?

Answer:

Feelings are emotions and changeable. God, being all perfect, does not change. When we say that God has sorrow for our sins, we are using analogies to human experience in an effort to better understand God. However, such analogies are not, and cannot be, fully reflective of God. Our sin separates us from God, who has given us his own Son to unite us to him. Sorrow is a human emotion that gives us some idea of the reality of what our sin causes in our relationship with God.
