Did Jesus Disobey His Parents?

Question:

How can we say that Jesus was obedient if he caused his parents such worry when he stayed behind in the Temple?

Answer:

The Gospel of Luke does not present anything that would suggest Jesus had disobeyed his parents. Luke states that Jesus stayed behind, but his parents did not know it (2:43). That’s a misunderstanding, not disobedience. When his parents find Jesus, Mary does not accuse him of disobeying them but expresses how his actions affected them (v. 48). Jesus’ response is that they should have known where he’d be (v. 49). Once again, it is portrayed as a misunderstanding (v. 50) and not an act of disobedience.
