Can I Marry the Same Person Twice?

Listen to the audio version of this content

Question:

My husband and I were married in the Church. Unfortunately, we did get divorced and now are reconciling. Would it be possible for us to get remarried in the Catholic Church?

Answer:

You would not be able to get remarried in the Church. Though you were divorced according to civil law, the Church still considers you to be married to each other. Your original wedding day remains the day that the Church considers you to have gotten married.

You would, however, be able to have a ceremony in which you renew your vows.
