Can I Make Summer Plans Without Mass?

Question:

Can an adolescent receive a dispensation from the Sunday Mass obligation to attend summer camp?

Answer:

The Church does not require us to choose every activity based on the availability of Mass.

Catholics have been explorers of the Earth and space without access to Mass. Catholics have been settlers in lands without priests.

As long as someone is not deliberately choosing to avoid Mass, he is simply choosing to do something where merely one of the many consequences of that choice is that he won’t be able to attend Mass.

If Mass attendance is an impossibility then the obligation is abrogated. However, to assure one’s conscience, he could receive a dispensation from his pastor.
