Boxes and Envelopes Are for Money

Question:

How are Lenten boxes and envelopes used?

Answer:

I presume that the boxes you refer to are the boxes many parishes distribute from Catholic Relief Services’ Rice Bowl project. With those, the idea is to drop into the box the money you ordinarily would have spent for a meal on days of abstinence and fasting. At the end of Lent, you would either return the filled box to your parish for processing or write a check in the amount collected and send it to Catholic Relief Services for its projects to help the poor around the world.

As for envelopes, I presume those are the envelopes your parish distributes for the Sunday collection. Just put in cash or a check in the amount you ordinarily donate to your parish, and drop the envelope in the collection basket at the next Sunday Mass you attend.
