Appropriate Liturgical Art

Question:

What pictures or paintings or icons are suitable for the sanctuary of a Catholic church?

Answer:

I recommend you read the USCCB document Built of Living Stones: Art, Architecture, and Worship issued and approved by the authority of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops on November 16, 2000. In it you’ll find specific guidelines for using art in churches.

Further resources:

Canon 1188: “The practice of exposing sacred images in churches for the veneration of the faithful is to be retained. However, these images are to be displayed in moderate numbers and in suitable fashion, so that the Christian people are not disturbed, nor is occasion given for less than appropriate devotion.”
