A Deacon May “Preside”

Question:

When a deacon witnesses a Catholic wedding ceremony, how should he be referred to in the wedding program? "Celebrant" or "presider" do not appear to be appropriate since there is no Mass.

Answer:

A nuptial liturgy outside of Mass is still a public liturgy of the Church. If a priest is not present at a nuptial liturgy, then a deacon can preside at the liturgy. I recommend crediting the deacon in the program as the “presider.”
