A Celebrant Can’t Skip the Chalice

Question:

Our new pastor does not consume the precious blood in any manner, not from the chalice or by intinction. Is the Eucharist valid?

Answer:

If a priest celebrates Mass, he is to consume the host and drink from the chalice. If he is unable to do so, then he should not celebrate Mass. If he is an alcoholic, he may request permission to use mustum (sacramental grape juice).

If a priest fails to consume both species, then he fails to completely fulfill the eucharistic sacrifice (Mediator Dei 112). However, this does not mean that the Eucharist somehow reverts to being unconsecrated. The sacrament is still valid and present, and the faithful still receive it.
