A Catholic Child and Non-Catholic Services

Question:

Should a preteen Catholic regularly attend a non-Catholic service as well as Mass?

Answer:

I would not recommend this practice, since it might have the effect of leading the child away from the sacraments. Sometimes Protestant churches have more interesting youth programs than Catholic parishes, but the child needs to be instructed about the importance and power of the holy Eucharist and the Church’s teaching. If he or she can experience this in a context of well-instructed and enthusiastic Catholics, then so much the better.

Normally one does not attend non-Catholic worship except for a social obligation, like a wedding or a funeral. This child may go to Protestant services in order to show good will to his friends, but he or she should not do so habitually.
