Defend the Faith in Truth and Spirit
We live in a new golden age of apologetics. From our screens to our bookshelves, there is a richness of accessible resources to help believers defend and explain their faith in God, Christ, and the Church. But in all the arguments, Bible verses, and historical references we have at our fingertips, could there be something missing?
Catholic Answers, the world’s largest lay apologetics ministry, is concerned that defending the Faith has gotten so focused on the mind that it’s in danger of losing its soul. And so, in the unique new book The Soul of Apologetics, the Catholic Answers team offers a reminder of and a shot of adrenaline for the all-important but oft-neglected spiritual side of apologetics.
“It has become too common, when doing apologetics, to reduce our faith to something clinical and abstract,” says Todd Aglialoro, director of publishing for Catholic Answers and general editor of The Soul of Apologetics. “This in turn makes it easy to view the other person in an argument as just an ideological foe—someone to be ‘owned’ or ‘destroyed’ on social media rather than brought to understanding of the truth.”
The Soul of Apologetics is designed to reverse these tendencies by re-ordering our perspective and priorities when we give reasons for our hope (1 Pet. 3:15). It trains us to view even hostile unbelievers as persons with a right to truth and charity. And most of all, it gently draws us back from the tendency to view doctrines of the Faith as mere data or propositions. Through directed prayers, meditations, and instruction, it teaches us afresh how to approach God’s saving mysteries in the way they deserve: with eyes of wonder, gratitude, and love.
