Is Mindfulness 'New Age'?
Is mindfulness to be considered "New Age"? Is it to be avoided like yoga and transcendental meditation?
By themselves mindfulness practices are not contrary to the Faith. They simply make use of our powers of attention. It is true that some of these practices may be described as taking elements from, say Buddhist meditation, but the elements chosen regard psychological factors and do not contradict Christian insights.
There is, after all, in all the great traditions of reflection and meditation a common experience of human thought and feeling and perception that is true. The great fathers of Christian monasticism in the fourth century and later used the techniques and terminology of the ancient Stoics and Skeptics in describing human faculties and emotions. So, in and of themselves, these practices are licit and innocent of any transgression of the first commandment.
