In his "theology of the body," Pope John Paul II noted that marriage is the "primordial sacrament." What could this mean? Think of what all the sacraments do. They nurture, deepen, and intensify the relationship between us and God. God’s very life dwells in our being, and the sacraments allow that life to grow and deepen. Marriage, though, signifies that relationship itself, which all the other sacraments deepen. In that sense, it is foundational to the other sacraments.
